"You Become What You Give Attention To" -Epictesus
In my perspective, attention is a currency that we utilize in our daily lives. We choose to pay attention to certain people and certain things and this in turn creates our reality. Many pay attention to negativity and this turns them into negative people, the same goes for those who are focused on positivity, they become positive people.
Just the other day I woke up feeling blessed, why? Because I pay a lot of attention to my blessings. I count them, I pray for them and I keep receiving them daily. The theory here is I believe I am blessed because I focus on my blessings, in essence I pay attention and I become the things I pay attention to, I also become more like the people I pay attention to.
In church this past Sunday the pastor spoke about how the congregation chooses to trust him and let him be their spiritual father. We pay attention to him, we give him our time and minds and allow him to elevate us and transform us into new and improved people. Who are you giving your attention and how do they influence you? Take some time to evaluate the people you give your attention to, are they helping you learn or grow or are they keeping you Small or even worse are they making you a dwarf (mentally).
If we become what we pay attention to... And that is a big "IF", this means that you are who you are today because of the things, people and activities you have paid attention to in the past. This means that by choosing to shift your attention and focus you can become a different person. This is a very intriguing thought, it points to a bigger truth about influence. The people & ideas that have shaped your life, did this because you gave them payment in the currency of attention.
If Attention was indeed a currency, it would out rank the dollar, pound or Yen on any day. As you read these words, I do not know you, who you are and what your dreams are but I know one thing You are wealthy. Why? Because you have a power.
What "power"? The power of choosing what you focus on, what you "pay" attention to. Today you have chosen to give attention to me and one thing I know is that giving attention to me is not only a good idea but a great investment into your future.
As you read this blog post, you have chosen to give me your attention when others chose to give their attention to other things and other people. In turn the attention you pay to me either downgrades you or upgrades you, whether you realize it or not. All I am to point your focus to is that whatever you focus on will be magnified.
As we near the end, I would like to firmly agree with the stoic philosopher Epictesus, I believe that we become what we give attention to.
I only have one question for you, who & what are you paying attention to? That is ecxatly what you will become..
