Psycho-cybernetics

Psycho-Cybernetics is a book written by Maxwell Maltz. It explains how the mind works and how you can use it to positively impact and change your life. I learned that the life you have is equal to the self-image of the life you allow yourself to have. If you change your self-image, you will change your life.

The human mind is made up of two part's, namely ;

(a) The concious Mind

(b) The subconscious mind

Maxwell Maltz in his book goes on to write about how, we all have a self image in our sub-concious mind and we always act in alignment with the self-image we have of ourselves. Take what i am doing now, i am writing because i have a certain self image in my mind. This self image then influences the activities i am involved in.

If your self image is someone who is cheerful, giving, forgiving and compassionate then you act in accordance with the image of yourself in your mind. When we want to change behaviors we must first change the self images in our minds. All of us are capable of achieving anything but what blocks us from realizing our wildest dreams are the poor self images we have. In the kingdom of God(operations of the spirit) , you are ecxatly what and who you think you are - In psychology we all know that you become what you think about most of the time.

Psycho-Cybernetics asserts that ones limits are only controlled by the perspective & perception (self image) we have of ourselves. The self image is at its core "constructed" consciously or unconsciously from our past experiences. Peoole that identify themselves as failures do so because of past experiences which gave them experiential knowledge of failure. Through this experience, limiting beliefs are foremed which ultimately leads to a poor image of self.

"The self image is key to changing your life because all your actions, feelings, behaviors and abilities are consistent with this self image"-Maxwell Maltz

Images (Shapes, colour, forms, visual representation) are always dependent upon perspective. In order to change your self image it is imperative that you change your perspectives. In design there are different perspectives e.g ariel perspective (atmospheric), objects can seem different if looked at from a different point of view .Many of us have a negative orientation such that we do not perceive goodness when it is starring back at us in the mirror. We must change our perspectives and clean up the lenses of belief through which we view ourselves and the world we live in. No amount of external help can do you good if you have a poor self image.

Maxwell Maltz the man who wrote the book "Psycho-cybernetics" was a plastic surgeon by profession. He discovered this concept i am writing about today after performing a countless number of surgeries. He was the proffesor of Plastic Surgery at the University of El-Savador.

Below is an excerpt from his timeless book, "Psycho-cybernetics" to give a bit of background on his revolutionary discovery.

FAILURES THAT LED TO SUCCESS

In a previous book, written some 20 years ago (New

Faces—New Futures) I published a more or less collection of case histories where plastic surgery, and particularly facial plastic surgery, had opened the door to a new life for many people. That book told of the amazing changes that often occur quite suddenly and dramatically in a person's personality when you change his face. I was elated at my successes in this respect. But, like Sir Hum?phry Davy, I learned more from my failures than from my successes.

Some patients showed no change in personality after e surgery. In most cases a person who had a conspicuously ugly face, or some "freakish" feature corrected by surgery, experienced an almost immediate (usually within 21 days) rise in self-esteem, self-confidence.

But in some cases , the patient continued to feel inadequate and experienced ced feelings of inferiority. In short, these "failures" con?tinued to feel, act and behave just as if they still had an ugly face.

This indicated to me that reconstruction of the physical image itself was not "the" real key to changes in person?ality. There was something else which was usually influ?enced by facial surgery, but sometimes not. When this

"something else" was reconstructed, the person himself

changed. When this "something else" was not reconstructed the person himself remained the same, although

his physical features might be radically different.
