The Self Audit
Auditing is usually associated with accounting and business analysis but today I want to talk about an audit of self done by self. An Audit is the examination or inspection of various books of accounts by an auditor followed by physical checking of inventory to make sure that all departments are following documented system of recording transactions. It is done to ascertain the accuracy of financial statements provided by the organisation.
I would like to share a concept that will enable us to track our actions and our progress in our lives. The only way to do it effectively is by paying attention to the outcomes of our daily actions. I will even go as far as suggesting that keeping records on our daily actions and our goals is a GREAT idea.
Examine the last 5 years of your life, and make a list of areas where you want to see change or improvement. Then realise that it is all up to you to make the necessary improvements. If we do not pay attention and begin to audit our lives we will fall victim to the destruction caused by ignorance. The assumption that things just happen is what leads to failure in any area of life, if we want better results we need to be intentional about getting better and the first step to getting better is conducting a self audit.Arguably every area or "department" of your life must be audited(I am not suggesting that you track every step or move BUT areas where you want to see change) e.g What is your daily academic diet? - [Education]
What is the cause of all your disagreements? - [Interpersonal Relationships]
A self audit is in other terms a process of performance evaluations. If we want to keep doing better (or find out why we are NOT doing better) we must conduct one very frequently in order to track progress over in every area of life and to build a bridge between where we are and where we want to be .Constantly tracking time, money are basic examples of how the self audit can be used. You can refer back to real data collected and you can face reality, then begin to make necessary changes.
Intentional change comes from being informed about the situation. Ray Dalio in his book Principles summed it up perfectly in this statement "Data culture is desicion culture". This places us in a position to begin the process of transformation, internal transformation will lead to external results (consequences). It will take a changed person to change their world, family & community but we need to be intentional about that change and do a self audit. We all know we need to change some things but we must begin to be Concious of what ecxatly we have to change (clarity is everything).
A Self audit is introspection, look inwardly.
