"Woke But Asleep"

In our times, the word "woke" is used frequently to refer to people we regard as conscious or "aware". The wokeness we usually refer to is up for questioning today in this text.

As time evolves, the meaning of some words or phrases becomes "vague" because it is used frequently thus leading to confusion in terms of true interpretation.

The word "woke" is described by Merriam-Webster as “chiefly US slang”, the dictionary defines the word as: “Aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice).”Woke nowadays refers to being aware or well informed in a political or cultural sense, especially regarding issues surrounding marginalised communities - it describes someone who has “woken up” to issues of social injustice.

How can a generation full of so many "woke" people then struggle with so much? In our present day we deal with many issues & problems caused by nothing else but our own insecurities and fears. Most of us doubt our capabilities and never reach for the stars, the we spend the rest of our lives worrying and complaining (Deadly Attitude Diseases)

If we are indeed a woke generation, what are we Concious of, if not our own identity, philosophy and direction? How can we be woke when we still question our identity & purpose or even mere existence. Most of the time, when we say we are woke, we are always referring to knowledge or information about external factors not internal ones(e.g Sports, Politics, Entertainment) . To give an example, we are able to spot "racism" from a mile away, but are unable to spot our own limiting beliefs. We are good at diagnosing external situations instead of diagnosing ourselves internally. We seem to know what others are doing wrong yet we do not pay attention to our own personal development & systems.

Depression & self doubt has plagued the "woke" society, nobody feels adequate but we all know what is wrong with the outside world not realizing that many of our underlying issues are rooted deep within. Knowledge of self is the true "wokeness" that should be applauded, this provides a basis for all other healthy relationship. First we need to have great relationship with self and be "woke'' on self that we have a better understanding of how we are wired before we attempt to understand Societal issues.

Material gains & Social status seems to be all we are after at the expense of losing ourselves in the process. Many of us work jobs they don't like with people they do not like just to make ends meet but are applauded. Those who reach for their wildest dreams are mocked & ridiculed and called all kinds of names. If this is  wokeness, I am not sure I want it.

I recently watched a short clip by Patrick Bet David, where he said

1.If you know every new song, and you are broke, You have a problem YOU ARE LAZY.

2.If you know every show on Netflix and you are broke, You have a problem YOU ARE LAZY.

Most of us are lazy but we do not even know, for it has been normalized. Anything that is normalized is embraced and not called out for what it truly is(Just like Being Woke) . What good is it knowing all the shows on Netflix when you are not even in the movie business.

Entertainment always seems to come first(Before Purpose & Self Confidence) , when it should come last. Just the other day I realized that the wealthiest and most sought after individuals are entertainers, that should tell you a lot about our state of mind as a society. We are always looking for ways to escape reality and entertainment always provides a secret hatch to exit the quagmire we find ourselves in.

Real estate in our minds is occupied by useless information, my big question is would someone who is "aware" waste their time? The woke generation seems to ironically be asleep. Our minds are full of toxic and destructive content, most of which we "consume" intentionally. The media has been a great tool for sharing all types of content, which in some way has made us to conform to certain norms of society.

Most of us know too much about the external when there is much to be "woke" on internally. If our focus would be deeply rooted in self, we would produce better outcomes for we would be in the awareness of the truth that we are the custodians of the narrative. I am not suggesting we be selfish, I am just questioning what & who we refer to when we use the word "Woke".

We all have situations which must be transformed  but we are always focused on others & judging them, when in fact everyone has a free will and is to do what they want. Our primary focus must be our own personal lives, "effective wokeness" must be rooted within not without.
